Benchtop pH and Conductivity Meters

A benchtop pH and conductivity meter is a laboratory instrument designed for stationary use on a lab bench. Unlike handheld or portable testers, benchtop meters offer larger displays, more stable readings, and advanced features such as multi-point calibration, data logging, and PC connectivity. These instruments measure two of the most commonly tested water quality parameters: pH (the acidity or alkalinity of a solution) and electrical conductivity (EC), which indicates the level of dissolved ions in water.

Hanna Instruments manufactures a full range of benchtop meters for pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ORP, and ISE measurement. Whether you run a water treatment facility, a food production line, a pharmaceutical QC lab, or a university research department, Hanna has a meter built for your application. Every meter is backed by Hanna’s warranty and service program and supported from our Singapore office.

edge meters offer many advanced features including automatic calibration and automatic temperature compensation of readings. All edge meters have a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) mode to review calibration information include the data and time of the last calibration. The edge meters can log data and transfer data through either a USB port for a flash drive or a micro-USB port when connected to a computer.

For pH measurement, the edge meters offer CAL Check. The CAL Check feature identifies potential problems during the calibration process, such as clean the electrode, check the buffer for contamination, and the overall “health” condition of the electrode. For pH the edge meters are available as a dedicated and Bluetooth version for pH only and a multiparameter version that can accept either a EC or DO probe.

For EC measurement, the edge meters offer automatic temperature compensation and range selection. The edge meters are also able to measure TDS and salinity. The edge user can set the EC to TDS conversion factor, temperature coefficient, and type of salinity to be measured. For EC, the edge meters are available in a dedicated version for EC/TDS only or a multiparameter version that can accept either a pH or DO probe.

For DO measurement, the edge meters offer automatic temperature compensation and manual selection for altitude and salinity compensation. For dissolved oxygen, the edge meters are available as a dedicated version for measuring only DO or a multiparameter version that can accept either a pH or EC probe

Benchtop Meters by Measurement Parameter

pH and ORP Benchtop Meters

pH measurement is the foundation of water quality analysis. Hanna’s pH and ORP benchtop meters range from basic models like the HI2210 (0.01 pH resolution, automatic 2-point calibration) to research-grade instruments like the HI5222 (two-channel input, ISE capability, 0.001 pH resolution). All pH benchtop models accept standard BNC-connected electrodes and include automatic temperature compensation (ATC).

Hanna’s exclusive CAL Check feature is available on select models. CAL Check monitors electrode condition during calibration and alerts you to problems such as a dirty electrode, contaminated buffer, or an aging sensor that needs replacement.

Conductivity Benchtop Meters

Conductivity measurement tells you how well a solution conducts electricity, which is directly related to the concentration of dissolved salts, minerals, and ions. Hanna’s EC, TDS, and salinity benchtop meters use four-ring platinum conductivity probes that resist polarization and provide stable readings across a wide measurement range.

The edge HI2030 is a popular choice for labs needing conductivity, TDS, and salinity readings from a single instrument. It features automatic ranging, a user-adjustable EC-to-TDS conversion factor, and a selectable temperature coefficient. The HI2003 is a dedicated conductivity meter for users who do not need pH or DO measurement.

Dissolved Oxygen Benchtop Meters

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a key parameter in environmental monitoring, aquaculture, and wastewater treatment. The edge HI2040 measures DO with automatic temperature compensation and allows manual adjustment for altitude and salinity. The HI6000 series also includes advanced DO benchtop meters with both polarographic and optical (opdo) probe options.

Multiparameter Benchtop Meters

If your lab measures more than one parameter regularly, a multiparameter benchtop meter saves space, cost, and complexity. The edge series is built around a multiparameter concept: start with a pH meter (HI2020), EC meter (HI2030), or DO meter (HI2040), then add probes for the other parameters as needed. All edge meters accept pH, conductivity, and DO digital electrodes through a single 3.5 mm connector.

Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) Benchtop Meters

For labs measuring specific ions such as fluoride, nitrate, chloride, or ammonia, Hanna offers ISE benchtop meters with direct concentration readout, automatic calibration, and pH compensation. The HI5222 is a two-channel research-grade meter that handles both pH and ISE measurements simultaneously.

How to Choose the Right Benchtop Meter

Selecting a benchtop meter comes down to four main considerations:

  1. What parameters do you need to measure? If you only measure pH, a dedicated pH meter like the HI2210 is sufficient. If you need pH and conductivity in one instrument, a multiparameter meter like the edge HI2020 (with an added EC probe) or the HI5521 dual-input meter is the better option.
  2. What level of accuracy do you need? For routine testing, a meter with 0.01 pH resolution and ±0.02 pH accuracy (HI2000 series) is more than adequate. For research or regulatory compliance requiring higher precision, choose a meter with 0.001 pH resolution and ±0.002 pH accuracy (HI5000 or HI6000 series).
  3. Do you need data logging and GLP compliance? Labs operating under ISO 17025, GMP, or similar quality standards should choose a meter with built-in GLP data (date, time, calibration slope, offset, and buffer values). The edge series and HI6000 series both offer full GLP functionality with USB data export.
  4. What is your budget? Hanna’s benchtop meters range from approximately SGD 600 for a basic pH meter (HI2209) to over SGD 2,000 for a research-grade two-channel system (HI5222). Consider what features you actually need before choosing a higher-tier model.

Accessories and Calibration Solutions

Every benchtop meter requires regular calibration to maintain accuracy. Hanna manufactures a full line of calibration solutions including pH buffers (4.01, 7.01, 10.01) and conductivity standards (84 µS/cm, 1413 µS/cm, 12.88 mS/cm). All solutions are NIST-traceable and come with a Certificate of Analysis.

Replacement electrodes and probes are also available for every Hanna benchtop meter. For conductivity measurement, the HI763100 digital four-ring platinum probe is the standard electrode used with edge series meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a benchtop pH meter and a benchtop conductivity meter?

A pH meter measures the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution to determine how acidic or alkaline it is. A conductivity meter measures the ability of a solution to conduct an electrical current, which reflects the total dissolved ion content. Many Hanna benchtop meters can measure both parameters when paired with the appropriate electrodes.

How often should I calibrate my benchtop meter?

For pH, calibrate at least once daily before use, or more frequently if measuring across a wide pH range or working with demanding samples. For conductivity, calibrate weekly or whenever you change the probe. Models with CAL Check will alert you if calibration quality has drifted.

Can I add conductivity measurement to an existing edge pH meter?

Yes. The edge series is modular by design. If you own an edge HI2020 (pH meter), you can purchase the HI763100 conductivity probe separately and plug it in. The meter will automatically recognize the probe and switch to conductivity mode.

What does CAL Check do?

CAL Check is a Hanna-exclusive feature that evaluates the health of your pH electrode during calibration. It checks electrode slope and offset values and alerts you to issues such as contaminated buffers, dirty electrodes, or sensors that have degraded over time. This helps prevent inaccurate readings before they happen.

Do Hanna benchtop meters work with third-party electrodes?

Hanna pH meters with standard BNC connectors will accept most third-party pH electrodes. However, the edge series uses proprietary 3.5 mm digital electrodes with built-in microchips. These digital probes store calibration data and are designed specifically for edge meters.
